Create emotion, mood, and tone with cinematic interior lighting

This course digs deep into first scouting your location and what to look for, understanding that the time of day is important even though you are shooting inside, your lens choice, your emotional lighting mood, tone, the lighting package, and the finesse of seeing each stroke of light as if you were painting on a canvas.

01. The Scout
- How to Light Day Interiors: Location Scouting (15:10)
  Follow along with Shane Hurlbut at his home as he explains the location and the scene that will be filmed. Go through the location scout with Shane to learn how he envisions building out the set in a broad sense, taking account of the entire location and lighting it in a way that complements what the house naturally provides.
02. Pre-Lighting

  Now that we know where we want our cameras and our talent, we can add haze, finesse our floodlights to create a beautiful key light, and make adjustments to our color temperature. Set up the interior, add haze, and setup DIY lights. Setup the bounce on the key light, stage 3 flood lights, then head inside to see what the changes look like. Make temperature adjustments.
- How to Light Day Interiors-Part 2 (8:43)
  Watch as Shane experiments with light options to get the best results and see how he responds to different challenges. Learn to light in mostly compact and small areas to make a big impact. Control sunlight with a shelf to create shadows and work with color gels. See all of Shane’s camera settings and watch the interior lighting results in real time as he makes fine tuning adjustments to the lights outside.

  Review the schematic of the light setup. Focus on getting the right color temperature with gels to get beautiful color separation. Learn about ratios and IRE values to get everything dialed in.

  Tie everything together and make final changes. Learn to add light in the foreground to create more mood. Make tilting and panning adjustments on the camera while working with the actress. See the final result that drives emotion and delivers the punch that Shane was looking for.

  Imagine it’s 500 years into the future. The world was bombed, and there has been a rebirth. The world is full of color and saturation, and we are in a lush, thick forest, surrounded by life and critters. This is the world we are in for Into the Badlands. Go on set with Shane and learn how he managed to get desirable shots, as well as the why behind the how.
- How To Replicate Midday Interior Light: Into The Badlands (16:06)
  Go on location with Shane to a plantation along the Mississippi River about 45 minutes outside of New Orleans. Watch as he explains some exterior and interior shots from Into the Badlands. Learn how Shane made Badlands feel like a different world where there was color contrast between warm and cool tones, strong cyan colored moonlight, and strange sunlight patterns through leaves or the clouds.
